BUD PERRY
TAKES
“INTERNATIONAL GOLD 50”
08.09.08….Ft. Wayne, IN….It was “International Gold
Cup” Night at Baer Field Speedway, Ft. Wayne, Indiana,
Saturday night. The huge crowd had packed Tom Isch’s race
track to see some of the best racing in the Mid-west along
with a fire works display that would make the 4th
of July look like a sparkler. The evening would bring
victory for only one….. And agony for several others, as
thirty O’Reilly
USA
Mods came to take the “International Gold Cup 50” $1000
dollar top prize. Qualifying would find local Cory Setser
fast with a 18.525. Bud Perry would take the 6 Car Dash from
Jeremy Wallen to start the night off. Then it would be
another local Bud Adams taking the Fast Heat over Scott Coe,
Eric Schaffer, Brian Nester and Jason Timmerman. So far so
good……. But agony was not far off. The Last Chance Race
would find some pretty good racers trying to get in to the
feature line up. USA regular and current point leader Kyle
Jones, Toledo Speedway winner John Long, along with Joe
Axsom, Don Skaggs, Terri Popielarz, and Jonathon Martin were
buried in the pack that was headed by local Baer Field
driver Ralph Baxter and USA’s Chris Neuenswander. Coming off
of turn four to take the green from USA starter Steve
“Chicken” Little, Baxter drove Neuenswander into the outside
wall at the flag stand. The impact tore the right front
wheel off Chris’s ride and sent him sailing off turn one
with no brakes to stop. The #8 racer hopped the access road
and buried its self in the woods, destroying the car. Chris
was OK and with the help of a wrecker and a roll back his
car was returned to the pits. Kyle Jones would go on to win
the Last Chance race and secure him a spot in the
“International Gold Cup 50”. With the preliminary races over
the draw would set the start of the 50 lap feature. Fast
qualifier Cory Setser would start from the pole, with Scott
Coe on the outside. Damon Breedlove in the “X” machine would
roll off third, with Erik Schaffer fourth, Brian Nester
fifth and Bud Perry sixth. Cory would bring them down for
the start and lead the first lap as the field ran side by
side for position. The first yellow would fly for Steve
Minich as he tagged the outside wall in turn four ending his
night with minor damage. As the green flew again Setser
would start to fade and Bud Perry began his march to the
front. The final yellow of the night was for Joe Axsom who
struck a spinning Scott Moyer on the front stretch sending
Axsom into the outside wall, ripping the right front
suspension from his racer and once again ramping out of turn
one side ways as the car became air born. It first looked as
if it would go over on it’s top, but it settled down when
striking a telephone pole and landed in the parking lot.
Once again the driver exited without injury, but with a
demolished race car. When the Green dropped again Bud Perry
would sail on to win The “International Gold Cup 50”,
followed by Scott Coe, Bud Adams, Brian Nester, Brad
Springer and Cory Setser.
